Liturgical Help For Meaningful Celebrations

Each week, Father Julian shares reflections drawn from Scripture and the life of faith, offering guidance, encouragement, and inspiration for daily living.

Through these homilies, we are invited to deepen our relationship with Christ and to see God’s presence in the ordinary moments of our lives.

My dear readers,

Welcome to the website of the Shrine of the Virgin of Revelation in Bullsbrook, Perth, Western Australia. I am Fr. Paul Julian, the chaplain of this Shrine. I have been a priest for over 43 years, ordained in 1982.

My journey has taken me through studies in Philosophy and Sacred Theology at Sacred Heart College in Chennai (1975–1982), a Master’s in Liturgy and Sacramental Theology in Paris, France (1988–1991), and a Doctorate in the New Testament in Würzburg, Germany (1994–2000). I taught theology for several years at the Sacred Heart Seminary in Chennai (1987–88; 1991–94; 2000–2001). From 2001 to 2023, I served as a parish priest—ten of those years as dean—in the Diocese of Würzburg, retiring in January 2024. Since January 2025, I have had the joy of serving here in Australia as chaplain of this Shrine.

From my own experience, and from speaking with many fellow priests, I know how challenging it can be to prepare for daily Mass with depth and attention. With many responsibilities each day, it is not always easy to find the quiet time needed to read, reflect, and prepare meaningfully. Yet a prayerful celebration of the liturgy usually requires at least a few hours of reflection, so that both celebrant and community may truly be nourished.

Because we repeat many of the same prayers daily, we can easily slip into routine—saying the words without letting them speak to our hearts. This is true for priests as well as those who attend Mass every day.

For this reason, I have long dreamed of preparing thoughtful liturgical texts for every day of the Church’s three-year cycle—Sundays and weekdays—drawing from the Scripture readings, seasons, and feasts of each day. My goal is to help foster attentive, conscious, and fruitful participation.

These materials offer slightly varied formulations of the usual Mass prayers, adapted to the readings of the day. The endings of the prayers remain familiar, so the people can respond as usual. A gentle variation in wording helps us avoid automatic recitation and invites us to reflect more deeply. Each day’s texts are shaped so that a clear theme (“a red thread”) runs through the prayers and the homily.

The liturgical texts for the coming week (Sunday to Saturday) will be uploaded every Friday by noon.

Although our website includes automatic Google translation, I also hope to offer these materials in several other languages—German, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, Vietnamese, Burmese, Filipino, and more—in the years ahead.
